Before you can have a driving lesson, you need a provisional driving licence. It is quick to apply for online, and once it arrives you can start learning with an approved instructor.
When can you apply?
You can apply for a provisional licence when you are 15 years and 9 months old. You can start driving a car on public roads when you turn 17.
What you need to apply
- A form of identity, such as a UK passport
- Your addresses for the last 3 years
- Your National Insurance number, if you know it

Rules for learner drivers
- Display L plates on the front and back of the car (or D plates in Wales)
- When practising privately, be supervised by someone aged 21 or over who has held a full licence for that type of car for at least 3 years
- Make sure you are insured to drive the car
